After dipping the comb into a boiled concoction of juice mixed with walnut leaves; oils of tartar, costusroot, and myrtle; and several other ingredients I had no empirical knowledge of, Sally worked Q’s new and improved special formula through my long tresses. The weekly application might have seemed strange to some, but it worked to keep my hair a rich black hue, and not one lock fell out, thank goodness. The darker shade even made my hazel eyes seem more gold-green than brown.

While Sally put the rest of my bedchamber to rights, I sat on the balcony in the sun and waited in silence for the mixture to set, studying the copious entries in my old journal, and remembering all my pain, all my fears, all my plans. Revenge had sustained me for so long that I hardly knew how to exist without it simmering beneath my skin, and yet some days, it felt good to forget. Not today, however.

My fingers traced over the inked lines.
